Leaving Möðrudalur at 7:30 a.m., we pass over two glacial rivers, Kreppa and Jökulsá á Fjöllum, on our way to the central volcano Dyngjufjöll, site of the caldera Askja. At the edge of Dyngjufjöll, we will walk into the spectacular canyon Drekagil before driving over the last lava expanses to the opening of Askja. A forty min. walk across the floor of Askja will bring us to Askja lake and the crater Víti, containing warm water that is pleasant for a swim and healthy silica deposits for rubbing onto the skin. Continuing to Herðubreiðarlindir, we will enjoy the plants, animals and unique scenery of this nature reserve as well as seeing the home of one of the most famous Icelandic outlaws, Fjalla-Eyvindur. A drive over lava fields and the rivers Lindaá and Grafarlandaá should return us to Möðrudalur around 6 p.m.
